Meditation Techniques for Beginners – Going It Alone

How do you learn to meditate by yourself?  This is a question common amongst people in search of meditation techniques for beginners.

Feedback I often hear from beginners are comments like, “I need it to fight the stress and tension. Are there places where someone is teaching meditation for free? I just can’t understand concept of meditation and relax by myself while watching those meditation videos online or trying other ways by myself”

Some people can visualize very well. The best meditation for them is usually to see themselves at a very tranquil place, for example, the beach, the mountains, or a forest.  Some people, on the other hand, are more physically-oriented.  They can use meditations like following their breath, or they can focus on different body sensations. These sensations will tend to move, and following them is one form of meditation!

Other people are more auditory. They can focus on a mantra, which usually stops the chattering of the mind. Although it is more external, listening to relaxing music or chanting is a valid form of meditation. You just have to experiment with different types of meditation to find what works for you.  I would be cautious of CDs that claim you can “meditate like a Zen monk” in 5 minutes.

Meditation  takes some practice.  In the beginning, the mind is constantly chattering away.  However, with practice and by finding the right type of meditation for you, the rewards will be great—for both your mind and your body.  I speak from my own personal experience.

Meditation Techniques for Beginners – Proper Posture

November 30, 2010

11f39b5ab19ee1b Meditation Techniques for Beginners Proper Posture

When it comes to meditation techniques for beginners, one of most important aspects to developing a beneficial meditation practice is posture.  There are many different postures we can use when meditating, and each posture has their own mental affects.  The most common general postures (each with their own respective variations) are walking, standing, sitting, or lying down.

Despite what you may hear, there is no posture that is necessarily better than the next. The main thing to keep in mind is to put yourself in a position where you can breathe completely and freely.  Being comfortable is also important, however you don’t want to get too comfortable, which is one of the reasons why I’m personally not a big fan of meditating while lying down.  You want to be in a posture that gives you perfect balance between being relaxation and alertness.

I encourage you to try out different postures until you find what works best for YOU.  We are all different, and different positions and postures affect different people in different ways.

Meditation Techniques for Beginners – Avoiding a Big Mistake

November 19, 2010

460d278b3ab1840 Meditation Techniques for Beginners Avoiding a Big Mistake

Many people new to meditation give up because they’re unable to achieve complete mental silence.  They feel that not being able to achieve complete mental silence means their experience was a failure, which is absolutely, positively not the case.

Sure, the ultimate goal is to obtain complete mental silence, but even a reduction in mental noise is an accomplishment.  Just like anything else in life, it takes time and patience to attain optimum levels of achievement.  One of the most important meditation techniques for beginners to remember is to stick with it!  You’re doing great!
